Nina Berberova föddes i S:t Petersburg som dotter till en armenisk far och en rysk mor. Fadern var ingenjör. 1922 lämnade Berberova Sovjetunionen. Innan hon slutligen hamnade i Paris 1925, vistades hon på olika platser i Tyskland, Tjeckoslovakien och Italien.
